Wolverines Work with Akron Zoo to Solve Problems

Jennings' Trailblazers complete IBL with the Akron Zoo
Posted on 04/19/2023
Congratulations to Wolverine Trailblazers!!

The Akron Zoo gave a select group of Wolverine Trailblazers aka 6th graders at Jennings, the opportunity to complete and Inquiry Based Learning Project (IBL) in order to provide possible solutions to a challenge that affects our community.

The Challenge:
"North American songbirds are beautiful reminders of the natural world upon which we all depend.  Their numbers are declining due to human-caused changes in the environment, including collisions with windows and feral cat predation.  How can you, as 6th Grade Trailblazers, let people know about the songbirds' decline? How can we find a solution that helps the songbirds?"

Five groups of 6th grade students
gave up their lunch and recess time a few times a week to come up with solutions to the problem, they then presented their solutions to a panel of judges from the Akron Zoo on April 5th.

The zoo decided to implement 2 of those projects!

Congratulations to 6th graders John, Alisha, Alisha, and Riya!  Their project of a brochure on why you should spay/neuter your cat is moving forward.
Congratulations to 6th graders, Aksana, Shisam, and Keilyn! Their project of window sticker decals designed in the shape of birds is moving forward!

A BIG THANKS to Mrs. McHan, Mrs. Graham, Mrs. Green, and Dr. Jones for facilitating such a phenomenal opportunity for our Trailblazers.
